Abstract

University education plays a critical role in human capital development and national progress, particularly in developing economies such as Nigeria. Despite its strategic importance in producing skilled manpower for socio-economic development, the Nigerian university system continues to face persistent challenges that undermine academic quality and institutional effectiveness. These challenges include inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, declining academic standards, brain drain, weak governance structures, and ineffective quality assurance practices. With the rapid evolution of global educational standards, there is an urgent need for Nigerian universities to adopt innovative quality assurance mechanisms capable of revitalizing academic programmes and restoring public confidence in the higher education system. This study examines innovative quality assurance mechanisms for revitalizing university education in Nigeria, with a focus on promoting academic excellence and aligning institutional practices with global best practices. Drawing on existing literature and policy frameworks, the paper analyzes key quality assurance components such as accreditation processes, the role of regulatory bodies, technology integration, and stakeholder involvement. It also highlights major implementation challenges, including resistance to change, funding constraints, limited institutional autonomy, inadequate staff training, and technological barriers. The study further proposes strategic approaches for strengthening quality assurance implementation, including enhanced funding and resource management, continuous professional development, increased institutional autonomy, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and sustained investment in educational technologies. The findings underscore that effective quality assurance is essential for improving teaching, research, governance, and graduate employability. The study concludes that revitalizing Nigerian university education through innovative quality assurance practices is imperative for achieving academic excellence and contributing meaningfully to national development in a competitive global knowledge economy.
