SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE AS A TOOL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN ABUJA, NIGERIA

Rapid urbanization and population growth have intensified environmental pressures within urban built environments, particularly in developing countries. Sustainable architecture has emerged as a strategic approach to addressing environmental challenges associated with building construction and urban development. This study empirically examines the role of sustainable architecture as a tool for environmental management in Abuja. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative interviews of architects, urban planners, and building professionals operating within the city. A total of 150 structured questionnaires were administered and 138 were retrieved from to architects, construction professionals, and building occupants, while 15 key informant interviews were conducted with architects and environmental management experts. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis, while qualitative responses were examined through thematic analysis. Findings reveal that sustainable architectural practices such as passive ventilation, solar energy integration, rainwater harvesting, and use of locally sourced materials significantly contribute to environmental management by reducing energy consumption, minimizing construction waste, and improving indoor environmental quality. The results also indicate that 72% of respondents acknowledged energy efficiency as the most significant benefit of sustainable architecture, while 65% identified policy limitations and high construction costs as major barriers to adoption. The study concludes that sustainable architecture can significantly enhance environmental management and urban resilience in Abuja if supported by appropriate policy frameworks, professional training, and public awareness. The study therefore recommends stronger government incentives for green building practices, improved environmental regulations, and integration of sustainability principles into architectural education and urban planning policies.
